Staff Training Information

Licensing requirements are determined by the Virginia Department of Education. Completion of requirements is inspected at least twice a year through unannounced licensing inspections. Each Second Home L. C. staff member is required to complete at least 16 hours of continuing education in a calendar year, starting with your date of employment. The 4.5-hour Preservice Training does not count into the 16-hours of training required during the first year of employment. Required training is paid time, and should be marked in your timesheet after the completion of the training. Keep track of your training hours in the training tracker provided by the Director.

Initial training:

Within 24 hours of your hire date, you will participate in an orientation with one of the Directors of Second Home. Your signed orientation form will be kept in your file as proof for the licensing inspection.
Within 2 weeks, complete the following training units: Complete the Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect free online training, and send / bring the Director your certificate to be included in your file. Within 30 days from your date of hire (unless you have a valid First Aid CPR certificate), complete an Adult / Child First Aid CPR/AED certificate training. Second Home will organize this for you.
Within 90 days from your date of hire
complete the following free two-part Preservice Training online at https://www.childcare.virginia.gov/providers/training-and-professional-development
- Virginia Preservice Training for All Child Care Staff: Foundations for Health and Safety (3 hours)
AND
- Virginia Preservice Health and Safety Training for Child Day Center School-Age Care (1.5 hours)
Click on the "start training" button. At the end of the training, please download your certificate and email / bring the Director a copy.
You may want to keep a copy for yourself in case you need it for a different job working with children in VA.
